Ctenarytaina spatulata, Taylor: soil water, mineral nutrients and their relations to eucalyptus dieback PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Santana, Dalva Luiz de Queiroz; Bellote, Antonio Francisco Jurado; Dedecek, Renato Antonio.
To develop this study it was used Eucalyptus grandis seedlings planted in three-liter pots, filled with soil collected on areas where dieback occurred (Arapoti, PR). The experiment consisted of six soil water level treatments, with and without insects. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 6 replications, arranged in six cages inside a green house. Three cages received insects and other three, not. The experiment consisted of the following treatments: 1. Sat. - soil water content maintained on the saturated conditions; 2. CC – soil water content maintained on field capacity; 3. 60 - humidity of the soil to 60% of the field capacity; 4. 30 - humidity of the soil to 30% of the field capacity; 5. A7 – soil water content maintained 7 days on the...

Effect water activity on in vitro mycelial growth of Neofusicoccum spp. infecting blueberry Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Latorre,Bernardo A; Díaz,Gonzalo A; Reed,María P.
Stem canker in blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) is a disease which is widely distributed around the world and of growing importance in Chile, associated with Neofusicoccum species. The purpose of the present work was to study the effects of water activity (a w) and temperature on mycelial growth in vitro of N. arbuti, N. australe and N. parvum, obtained from blueberries with symptoms of stem canker. According to the results obtained, 25 °C was the optimum temperature for mycelial growth of N. arbuti, N. australe and N. parvum. These species presented minimal growth at 35 °C and none at 0 and 5 °C. The effect of a w on mycelial growth was significant (P≤0.001) and varied with the species of Neofusicoccum and the temperature. At 25 °C, the...

Identification, pathogenicity, and histopathology of Lasiodiplodia theobromae on mamey sapote grafts in Guerrero, México Agrociencia
Tovar-Pedraza,Juan M.; Mora-Aguilera,José A.; Nava-Díaz,Cristian; Téliz-Ortiz,Daniel; Valdovinos-Ponce,Guadalupe; Villegas-Monter,Ángel; Hernández-Morales,Javier.
Dieback of mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota) grafts is the most important disease during vegetative propagation in commercial nurseries. In 2008, Lasiodiplodia theobromae identified by cultural, morphological and molecular characterization was associated with this disease in 97 % of necrotic rootstocks and scions samples from a nursery in Guerrero, México. The fungus was inoculated onto the binding site of El Mexicano grafted plants. Dieback symptoms and gradual drying with cracking of the bark from the apex to the base of the scion were observed 30 d after inoculation. Abundant mycelia and pycnidia were found on inoculated scions and graft union areas, in the periderm, and on leaf scars. Transverse sections of inoculated scions tissues showed pycnidia....

Algunas especies producen frutos...

Phytophthora multivora sp. nov., a new species recovered from declining Eucalyptus, Banksia, Agonis and other plant species in Western Australia Naturalis
Scott, P.M.; Burgess, T.I.; Barber, P.A.; Shearer, B.L.; Stukely, M.J.C.; Hardy, G.E.St.J.; Jung, T..
A new Phytophthora species, isolated from rhizosphere soil of declining or dead trees of Eucalyptus gomphocephala, E. marginata, Agonis flexuosa, and another 13 plant species, and from fine roots of E. marginata and collar lesions of Banksia attenuata in Western Australia, is described as Phytophthora multivora sp. nov. It is homothallic and produces semipapillate sporangia, smooth-walled oogonia containing thick-walled oospores, and paragynous antheridia. Although morphologically similar to P. citricola, phylogenetic analyses of the ITS and cox1 gene regions demonstrate that P. multivora is unique. Phytophthora multivora is pathogenic to bark and cambium of E. gomphocephala and E. marginata and is believed to be involved in the decline syndrome of both...

Re-evaluation of Phytophthora citricola isolates from multiple woody hosts in Europe and North America reveals a new species, Phytophthora plurivora sp. nov Naturalis
Burgess, T. Jung, T.I..
During large-scale surveys for soilborne Phytophthora species in forests and semi-natural stands and nurseries in Europe during the last decade, homothallic Phytophthora isolates with paragynous antheridia, semipapillate persistent sporangia and a growth optimum around 25 °C which did not form catenulate hyphal swellings, were recovered from 39 host species in 16 families. Based on their morphological and physiological characters and the similarity of their ITS DNA sequences with P. citricola as designated on GenBank, these isolates were routinely identified as P. citricola. In this study DNA sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S gene of the rRNA operon, the mitochondrial cox1 and β-tubulin genes were used in...

The Impact of El Nino on Northeastern Forests: A Case Study on Maple Syrup Production AgEcon
Bergeron, Nancy; Sedjo, Roger A..
El Nino events are likely to affect maple syrup production since it is very sensitive to weather patterns. A statistically significant direct correlation has not been found in our preliminary analysis, however. This may be because many other factors affect production and because weather anomalies also occur in non-El Nino years. Few defensive activities are available to maple syrup producers to alleviate the negative impacts of weather anomalies on their production. Hence, the value of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecasts to them is likely to be low, even if a clear correlation between productivity and ENSO events was eventually found. Overall, small welfare impacts of El Nino weather events are expected from their impact on the maple syrup...
